“You didn’t build that!” – Barack Obama
“I’m not familiar with precisely exactly what I said but I stand by what I said whatever it was!” – Mitt Romney
The weird war of words is going off-shore for the next few days, as Mitt Romney is currently visiting our allies in Britain, Israel and Poland. London Telegraph reporter Jon Swaine writes:
As the Republican presidential challenger accused Barack Obama of appeasing America’s enemies in his first foreign policy speech of the US general election campaign, advisers told The Daily Telegraph that he would abandon Mr Obama’s “Left-wing” coolness towards London.
In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity, one suggested that Mr Romney was better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Mr Obama, whose father was from Africa.
“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”…
A few quick thoughts.
1. President Obama has not visited Israel since July of 2008. There’s no denying this is a problem, but what does it mean?
2. What exactly is “left-wing coolness”? On this side of the pond, Gov. Romney repeatedly calls Obama “foreign”. Now it sounds like he’s calling Obama a “foreign” foreigner.
3. Are the above remarks prompting accusations of racial insensitivity? Joe Biden thinks so, as do I.
